Shaver Sockets and Bathroom Electrical Legislation
UK electrical regulations do not permit standard sockets or switches in a bathroom, except in zone 3 in specific circumstances. Why can't I fit a standard socket in a bathroom?
UK wiring regulations (BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations) divide bathrooms into zones based on proximity to water, and restrict what can be installed in each. A standard 13-amp socket presents a shock risk that these regulations are specifically designed to prevent — water and standard mains electrics are a dangerous combination, and the regulations exist to keep the two apart wherever a bath or shower is used.
What are the bathroom zones?
Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower itself. Only low voltage (max 12V), immersion-proof fittings rated at least IP67 are permitted.
Zone 1: The area above the bath or shower, up to 2.25m high and within 1.2m of the water outlet. Minimum IP44, no standard sockets.
Zone 2: The area 0.6m beyond Zone 1, and generally around a wash basin within 0.6m of the taps. Minimum IP44, no standard sockets.
Zone 3: The area 2.4m beyond Zone 2. This is the only zone where a standard socket may sometimes be permitted, provided it is RCD protected — though many installations still avoid it in favour of a shaver socket for practicality and safety margin.

Why are shaver sockets the exception?
A shaver socket isn't wired the same way as a standard socket. It contains an isolating transformer, which electrically separates the shaver socket output from the main electrical supply. This means that even if a fault occurred, there's no direct path back to earth through the transformer — significantly reducing the shock risk compared with a standard socket. This is why shaver sockets are permitted in zone 2 and, in some cases, zone 1, where a standard socket never would be.
Do shaver sockets support both 110V and 240V?
Most shaver sockets are dual voltage, supporting both 110V and 240V output, which allows them to be used with shavers and electric toothbrushes designed for different markets. This is a feature of the isolating transformer inside the unit, not something that varies by finish or plate style.
Can I fit a flex outlet or fused spur in a bathroom?
