Frequently Asked Questions

Is this real copper or a copper effect finish?

All copper sockets and switches from Socket Store are made from solid copper — not a copper-effect coating applied to another material. Solid copper has a depth and warmth that plated or painted alternatives cannot replicate, and it will develop a natural character over time if left unlacquered. The tarnished copper finish you see on the product pages is how the metal genuinely looks, not a printed or sprayed effect.

What is aged copper — do you sell it?

Aged copper is another term buyers use for copper sockets and switches with a darkened, weathered appearance. We do not currently stock a range labelled aged copper, but our antique copper and tarnished copper finishes cover the same aesthetic territory. Antique copper has a rich, darkened tone with depth in the recesses; tarnished copper sits at the darker, more characterful end of the spectrum. If you are searching for aged copper sockets or switches, either of these finishes is likely to be what you are looking for.

What is the difference between copper and rose gold sockets and switches?

Copper and rose gold are closely related but visually distinct. Our copper sockets and switches are made from solid copper, which gives them a warm, reddish-brown tone — particularly visible in the tarnished and antique copper finishes. Rose gold sockets and switches are also made from solid copper, but with a rose gold surface finish applied, giving them a softer, pinker, more contemporary tone. If you want the raw warmth of the metal itself, copper is the choice. If you want something that leans more towards blush and modern interiors, rose gold is the better fit.

Can I mix copper and rose gold in the same room?

Because both are copper-based, they are in the same colour family, but the difference in tone is enough that mixing them in the same room risks looking uncoordinated. We would recommend choosing one and using it consistently.

What is a living finish — does copper develop a patina?

A living finish is one that changes naturally over time as the metal reacts to air and handling. Solid copper is one of the most characterful living finish metals — left unlacquered, it will gradually deepen in tone and develop a natural patina unique to its environment. Our tarnished and antique copper finishes are lacquered to preserve their appearance at the point of manufacture, so they will remain stable rather than continuing to age. If you specifically want copper that will evolve over time, contact us to discuss unlacquered options.
