What Is a Two Way Light Switch?

A two way light switch can be used with another two way light switch to turn a light on and off from more than one location. It can also be used on its own as a one-way switch, controlling a light from a single position.

In this situation you need two 2-way light switches. The live cable connects to the COM terminal of one switch, and the switched live connects to the COM terminal of the other switch. The L1 terminal on one switch connects to the L1 terminal on the other, and the same for L2. Wired this way, either switch can turn the light on or off, independently of the position of the other switch.

Where are two-way switches used?

The most common use is a staircase, with one switch at the bottom and one at the top, so the light can be turned on or off from either level. They're also used in long hallways, or any room with two entrances, where it's convenient to control the light from either side.
